Charisma Man on CNN

Postby Rza on Fri Mar 05, 2010 10:32 am

Wow, big news day. 8.8 earthquake recovery chaos, tsunamis, the Toyota saga, Charisma Man.

I would have liked to rip this article a new one, but I'm not about to sign up on CNN so I can point out how these guys are actually attracting Eigo Bandits and ugly J-chicks in real life, haha . . .

?
One night, after a beer party,
the Danes settled in the hall
for sleep; they knew no sorrows.
The evil creature, grim and hungry,
grabbed thirty warriors
and went home laughing.

Think he meant to point to this article:

http://edition.cnn.com/2010/WORLD/asiap ... man.comic/

"I think the character personifies the phenomenon of geeky Western nerds with beautiful Japanese girls," Rodney said. "Charisma Man puts a face on that trend. It is a social satire of a situation which still continues in Japan."

The reality of course being that geeky Western nerds are picking up under-average Japanese girls. The blindness goes both ways.

The phenomena may seem amusing in the comic or even watching the pick ups at the bar. But single Japanese man Ryo Mitsumori is not amused.
"It's like I'm the one who's playing at the away game when they're on my home turf."

Thanks Slag.

Yeah, I used to read that comic when I first got to Japan. It was pretty funny.

Oh fuck ... here we go.....

"I think the character personifies the phenomenon of geeky Western nerds with beautiful Japanese girls,"

Phenomenom???? I personally have not seen this happen anywhere near enough for it to be a phenomenom. Yeah maybe this was the case like 20 yrs ago when this whole concept started but I never see this happen now, like never. I cannot remember the last time I saw a geeky gaijin with a smoking hot J girl on his arm. I am calling bullshit on this whole idea of the "charisma man"

And again, let's say that I left my building right now and suddenly I start to see a bunch of nerdy guys with hot girls. Do we know the story behind it??? What is going on?? Is it a "language exchange" as in him getting used for his English? Is the hot chick a hooker that he has bought and paid for? Is the hot chick just with him because he has money as "find a guy who makes over 10 million yen a year" type of thinking?

We know none of the background so no one can really examine this "phenomenom" all we see is just a hot chick walking along with a geeky guy and that is it.

Give me the details to analyse this in detail as a social "phenomenom" otherwise it is just bullshit noise just like the opposite "why do gaijin guys date ugly girls".

Looking back on the Charisma Man concept I can't believe now how shallow and non-mention-worthy it actually is. This is the realisation of reading Roissy's blog for more than six months. He has more than one trick in his bag.

What exactly do you mean?

Roissy is growing on me too. Not everything he writes, but some has value. Still can't quite get over his overuse of the "c" word though.

Am now on my patio, "outside in this awesome weather". Sorry, but I can not tell a lie. If it makes you feel any better I think I'm getting a sunburn.

I can't imagine that ever really happened. Also I had no idea "Charisma man" was a manga. I always thought it was just a funny way to describe a guy who is just over the top with his Westerness.

It's not a phenomenon. If a girl is out looking for someone who makes over 10 million yen a year, it doesn't really matter where he's from.

What's with you and this anti-establishment thing you got going on lately? Leave the tight necks to their little games and do things your way. Don't put anymore thought into what they do besides when they are going to pay back all the money they "borrowed" from you. Other than that let them live up eachothers asses. Who cares.

I think that a lot of "fresh-off-the-boat" type gaijin get laid left, right and center with (severely) sub-par j-girls, not knowing any better. Considering a good number of formerly "Nova" types would only stay for a year, this cemented the "charisma man" image.

Actually, I think you can pretty much judge how long a gaijin dude has been here based on how hot the girl he is with - the two are usually correlated, however there are (of course) various other factors and various statistical anomalies. This might even make a good PhD topic for someone.
