Let's not consider about children and very old people here.
They are not unimportant but they are not playing main part in our society.
There's a notion called gene competition or something like that.
People are struggling to pass their genes to next generations.
Just passing genes is not enough.
It's important to pass GOOD genes as MANY as possible.
Hence men are looking for beautiful women as many as possible.
and women are looking for men who can be socially successful.

My grandfather was one of only two Freudian psychiatrists in Sydney for many years.
He would have agreed with you. As I understand it, he came to that conclusion from observation of behavior rather than from genetic theory.

It's interesting that men tend to be more attracted to beautiful women than to intelligent or good-hearted women while women tend to be more attracted to socially successful men than to good looking men.
There are exceptions, of course.

I think that's almost like a self-fulfilling prophecy. Men want hot chicks because they are the most likely to produce good looking offspring, which in turn means that the children in turn will have an easier time procreating.

It's all about the shopping and lifestyle. The children are just like insurance. Get pregnant and you've got guaranteed shopping privileges for at least 18 years. If she gets shopping and good looks she's won the jackpot. But she risks losing him to other beauties with bigger tits who pretend not to be into shopping...
